Coupon Inserts

How many coupon inserts did you buy today?

I bought my normal 6 inserts from SundayCouponInserts.  Since my local Sunday papers now cost $1.50 (instead of $.98) I find it well worth the money to get my coupon inserts from Tampa, Florida.  I also know that I am getting the better coupons.

This morning I decided to make a run to Wal-Mart.  Now keep in mind I do not shop for very many things at Wal-Mart.  I will admit that I used to do all of my grocery shopping at Wal-Mart.  Once I started using coupons 2+ years ago I very seldom buy anything at Wal-Mart anymore.  However I was wanting to get some Diet Dr. Pepper and look to see if they carried Purina One Dog food.  I had read a couple of blogs that were promoting the fact that we could use the $4/1 Purina One Dog Food coupon from today SmartSource on a 1lb box which Wal-Mart sells for $2.57.  Well, appears that Wal-Mart does not sell anything smaller then a 3.5 lb bag for $6+.  I am going to watch the local stores for sales and while it may not be a money maker I should get a good deal on the dog food.

I grabbed a newpaper to see what coupons were in our local inserts and was surprised to see that we had the coupon for the new Diet Dr. Pepper 10 (up to $1.99 off).  Well the store brand soda went quickly back on the shelf.  I grabbed 10 Diet Dr. Pepper 10's and 10 newspapers.  I did have to go through several newspapers before I found 10 SmartSource that had the DDP10 coupon.  Appears there were 2 different Smart Source in our local newspaper today.  First time I seen that happen.

I bought 10 newspapers for $15.00, pulled out the coupons, then bought 10 Diet Dr. Pepper 10's for free.  The Diet Dr. Pepper 10's were $1.00 each.  The way I look at it, I would have spent $8.50 on the store brand soda anyway, so why not buy additional newspapers and apply the 'soda money' to the papers.  I ended up paying $6.50 for 10 newspapers (my math is coming from the $15 - $8.50 for store brand soda).

I am also excited because our local coupon inserts had coupons for 4 different 'Carolina Pride' meats (smoked sausage, bacon, sausage, and cocktail smokies).  These are not in the Tampa inserts.  All in all I think I made a good purchase.  I will keep track of what coupons I use out of these additional inserts to see if I did well, or if it was a bust.

Can I really save money by buying the Sunday Paper

I am going to keep track of how much money I saved and spent while using the coupons from the July 31st Sunday paper.  I've already told you that Coupons will pay for themselves.  Now I will show you that coupons can really save you money.

In just 5 days I have saved $170.18 and spent only $8.07 just from using the coupons from the July 31st Sunday paper.  This is a bit extreme because I did get several extra inserts in the papers this week, and I'm not using my normal 6-8 inserts, but the extra inserts happens quite often.

$70.24 saved and $0.00 spent at Food Lion
$  3.15 saved and $2.21 spent at Bi-Lo (I am not adding in the items purchased without using the 7/31 coupons)
$65.79 saved and $0.00 spent at Wal-Mart
$13.00 saved and $1.22 spent at Food Lion
$18.00 saved and $4.64 spent at Bi-Lo

Coupons will pay for themselves

Remember how I said you need to get at least 2 newspapers every week?  You may be sitting there right now saying to yourself that you are not about to pay $1 - $2.50 for a newspaper just to get coupons you will never use.  Am I right, did you just say that?

Hold that thought for just a moment and read on, I'm sure I will change your mind.

I purchase at least 6 newspapers every Sunday at Ingles for $.98 a piece.  Now keep in mind that it is only Keith and I at home.  So it is just the two of us that benefit from my couponing, well unless you stop to consider my dad shops from Deb's Deals a couple of times a year.  And once a year he might deliver a couple of care packages to my sister and my son.  My inlaws shop here once or twice a year.  Have I begun changing your mind yet?

I actually am able to get enough free/cheap items that I can share with our families, keep enough for us to use and still stay within a low monthly budget.  And I do this by purchasing at least 6 newspapers every Sunday for $5.98.  Yes, I do end up with coupons that are never used.  But I also use alot of coupons every month.

I purchase items that I never thought I would even be able to afford.  But who can not afford FREE?  Ask yourself this question "Can I really not afford to spend money on newpapers every week if it will allow me to save hundreds of dollars every month"?

This past Sunday I spent $5.98 on 6 newspapers.  There were four coupon inserts in this weeks newspaper.  1 SmartSource, 2 different RedPlums and 1 Proctor & Gamble.  As luck would have it this happened to also be a week where there were multiple copies of the SmartSource insert in some of the newspapers.  I found this out when I went through the newspaper to verify all of the inserts were in the newspaper.  Never, ever purchase a newspaper without looking through it to make sure your inserts are in there. I did make an exception this week because the newspapers I purchased did not contain the smaller of the RedPlum inserts.  I was actually fine with those inserts being missing because the SmartSource insert contained some really good coupons this week.

Remember I said there were multiple copies of the SmartSource insert?  Well 4 of the newspapers I purchased actually contained 3 of the SmartSource inserts in addition to the RP and P&G.  The other 2 newspapers contained 2 of the SmartSource inserts in addition to the RP and P&G.  This meant I was getting 16 SmartSource inserts, 6 RedPlum inserts and 6 P&G inserts for $5.98.  JACKPOT !!

I have already saved $70.24 by using the $3 Splenda Essentials coupon that was in the SmartSource insert.  So ask yourself again "Can I really not afford to spend money on newspapers every week if it will allow me to save hundreds of dollars every month"!

Leave me a comment and let me know if I have changed your mind even the tiniest little bit.

Have you started collecting coupons

If you want to use coupons to lower your grocery budget you need to start by collecting coupons.  There are numerous place you can start getting coupons.

1) Inserts from the Sunday Paper
    - get at least two (2) papers every week.   They will pay for themselves.
2) Print them from the internet
    - coupon.com
    - redplum.com
    - smartsource.com
    - bricks coupons
3) Print them from manufacturers websites
4) Facebook
    - create a separate facebook account just to get coupons
5) Magazines
6) Coupon clipping services on the internet
   - Buy whole inserts from the Sunday Paper
   - Buy just the coupons you want
---you are not buying coupons, you are actually just paying for their clipping services

There are numerous ways to organize your coupons.

1) Binder
    - use photo or baseball card pages.  Cut all of your coupons and put htem in the pages.
2) Store the inserts uncut.
    - Use hanging files to store the inserts by date.   Cut them when you want to use them.
3) Shoe box
    - Cut the coupons and put them in a box.  Not the most favorable method.
4)  Cut the coupons and put them in envelopes
5) Accordion file
    - small file made especially for coupons
    - larger one, will hold more coupons.

I have actually used all of these to store my coupons.
-I started out with the binder method, then added a box to store the loose coupons.  However, I did not cut all of my coupons, I only cut the ones I thought I would use.  I then stored the inserts in a pile in a box.
-I would store my inserts in a hanging files in a bankers box.  Then I would put the cut coupons in legal envelopes when I went to the store.
-I still store my inserts in hanging files in a bankers box.  However, I have graduated from envelopes to a midsize accordion file to carry my coupons to the store.

Use the method that works best for you.

Why should I pick up coupons I find at the grocery store?

This past spring I picked up some of the Kraft Food & Family booklets that were in a display at the front of Bi-Lo.
It contained coupons for items that I would not normally have purchased before I started couponing 2 years ago.
See the list of coupons below:
-$1 off Maxwell House coffee
-.55/1 Kool-Aid soft drink mix
-.55/1 Kraft or Bull’s Eye Barbecue sauce
-.55/1 Kraft Philadelphia Cream Cheese or Natural Shredded cheese
-.55/1 Kraft Real Mayo or Miracle Whip dressing
-.55/1 Kraft Singles or Deli Deluxe slices
-.55/1 Oscar Mayer bacon
-.55/1 Oscar Mayer hot dogs or cold cuts
-.55/2 Kraft Macaroni & Cheese
-.75/1 Nabisco crackers or cookies, 9.6 oz +

I use these coupons and purchase the items when they go on sale.  By doing this I have succeeded in getting most of them free or paying very little out of pocket.

Look at what I have been able to score by using these coupons:

free Kraft Barbecue sauce
free Bull's Eye Barbecue sauce
very inexpensive Kraft Miracle Whip
very inexpensive Oscar Mayer hot dogs
free Nabisco Saltines and Ritz Crackers

This week I have been able to score:
5 - 12 oz packages of Kraft American singles cheese for $1.17 total out of pocket
5 - 8 oz packages of Kraft shredded cheese for $4.45 total out of pocket

Coupon Newbie

Why should you use coupons?
- To save money and to stock your pantry.  You will find that you are going to bring home a lot more and spend a lot less when you go shopping with coupons.

Why should I use coupons, I have used them before and they did not work for me?
-It will work for you if you realize it is more than just taking one or two coupons to the store.  you need to get coupons, match the coupons to store sales and rebates, and stock up when the prices are the lowest.

Where do I get coupons?
-The Sunday newspaper:  Redplum (RP) and SmartSource (SS) coupon inserts can be found in the Sunday newspaper.  Some areas also get inserts in free local newspapers.  Once a month the Sunday newspaper also contains a Proctor & Gamble (P&G) insert.
-Internet printable coupons:  Redplum, SmartSource & Coupons.com.  They will ask you to download a small program which allows you to print the coupons.  Don't worry, these programs do not contain a virus as some people will try to tell you.  On most of these coupon sites you can print one coupon, then click your back arrow and print a second coupon.  If you want more than 2 coupons you will need multiple computers.
-Coupon mailers:  You have to give them your address, but you can get good coupons and also free samples.
-Magazines:  All You Magazine is a good source of coupons.  Wal-mart sells this magazine or you can get a monthly subscription.  It is always jam-packed with manufacturer's coupons.

How do I organize my coupons?
There are multiple ways to organize your coupons.  A google search will yield alot of good ideas.
-File the coupon inserts whole:  Put the date on the front and only cut coupons as you need them.
--I started out filing my coupon inserts whole.  I store them in hanging file folders and hang the files in a bankers box.
-Coupon  binder:  Clip your coupons and put them in baseball card or photo holders.
--I started out with a coupon binder.  I would clip the coupons as I needed them, place them in photo sleeves in the binder, and take the binder to the store.  This took more time then I wanted to spend.
-File box:  Clip your coupons and put them in the box
--I tried this and it didn't work well for me
-Envelope:  Clip your coupons and put them in an envelope.
--I still use this method.  I use an envelope for each store that I'm going to shop at
-Small plastic accordion file:  small, holds a lot of coupons, and you can file them in the pockets
--I use this for Rite Aid.  I always have this with me

How many Sunday newspapers should I buy?
-Buy what works for you but always buy them in multiples of 2.  Most stores will allow you to use 2 coupons on a B1G1 sale.
-I buy 6 newspapers every Sunday.  This may seem like a high number with only my husband and myself at home.  Since I share my stockpile with my family and my in-laws it works out to be the right number of inserts.
